Arriving in the bustling city of Quito, this Ecuador trip officially gets off to a start. A private driver will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to beautiful Zayzant eco-lodge just 20 mins from the airport. 2    Nov 6   Quito > Un poco del Choco Nature Preserve
Learn More
Highlights: Alambi Hummingbird Garden, set up mist nets for our scientific monitoring

Included: breakfast/lunch/dinner, private transportation, naturalist guide, activities

We'll get started with a 3 hour drive to Un poco del Choco nature preserve, which lies in a transitional zone between two biodiversity hotspots: the Chocó and the tropical Andes. One of UPDC's main objectives is to protect the rainforest located in the reserve's surroundings. To this end, UPDC conducts environmental education, research and conservation work at the regional level and promotes sustainable land management. UPDC also works with local nature protection initiatives and Ecuadorian non-governmental organizations.
On the way we will make a stop at the Alambi Hummingbird garden to enjoy these flying jewels and start with the first bird observations in the area. After a welcome from the UPDC team, we will have lunch at the reserve and attend a talk about safety and the different work being done in the reserve. We will also talk about the long-term monitoring of the avifauna, an essential part of the study of avifauna in the reserve. In the afternoon we will set up the mist nets necessary to prepare for our scientific banding session the following day.

Dinner and overnight at Un poco del Choco preserve.

3   Nov 7  Un poco del Choco Nature Preserve
Learn More
Highlights: Scientific banding-hummingbird pollen studies, photography opportunities, night hike in search of nature

Included: breakfast/lunch/dinner, naturalist guide, activities

In order to investigate bird communities in the reserve in more detail, a long-term banding project is being carried out. The birds, mainly passerines, are captured through mist nets and subsequently weighed, measured and inspected for possible peculiarities (health status, moult, parasites, etc.). If possible, age and sex are also determined and finally they are individually marked with metal rings and in special cases with colored rings. The data obtained through capture and recapture provide knowledge on various ecological parameters (breeding seasons, population size, moulting cycles, probability of survival, etc.). During this morning we will attend a scientific banding session accompanying and helping the reserve team in their research. We will be able to take photographs of the birds and we will also have the opportunity to collect pollen from the beaks of some species of hummingbirds to be analyzed in the laboratory in the afternoon. After dinner there will be the possibility of a night walk in search of the local fauna.
4   Nov 8  Un poco del Choco Nature Preserve > Quito
Learn More
Highlights: Introduction to Tropical Ecology, nectar production analysis, hike through the preserve

Included: breakfast/lunch/dinner, naturalist guide, activities, private transportation to Quito

This morning we will enjoy a hike through the trails of the reserve. During this activity we will understand more about tropical ecology and we will also learn how to identify local plants. After lunch we will have the opportunity to participate in the study of nectar measurement in the flowers. Regarding flower ecology and pollination, research focused on pollination ecology is ideal in tropical ecosystems, as the relationships between flowering plants and their pollinators are of fundamental importance in these ecosystems. In many cases, pollinators use flowers as their only energy source and the reproductive success of flowering plants depends in part on pollinator visits. For this reason, research on the ecology of different flowering plants in the Un poco del Chocó reserve is essential. The nectar production of the flowers is analyzed using micro-liter syringes. A refractometer is used to define the sugar concentration in the nectar. From these data the energy offered to the flower visitors can be calculated. The spectrum of visitors is recorded by means of observations and the frequency of visits is also noted.

In the afternoon we will depart and travel back to Zaysant eco-lodge outside of Quito
5   Nov 9   Quito > San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Islands
Learn More
Highlights: Galapagos Interpretation Center - Cerro Tijeretas, Charles Darwin landing spot, snorkeling, swimming

Included: breakfast/lunch/- , naturalist guide, activities, private transportation, flight to San Cristobal

In the morning we will head to the Quito airport to take the flight to the island of San Cristobal. Once there, our transportation will take us to the Galapagos eco-friendly hotel where we will have some time to settle down. Then we will visit the
Interpretation Center of the island, which is part of the project "Interpretation and Environmental Education Plan for the Galapagos Islands". The tour offered by the Interpretation Centre will show us the history of the Islands, their particular natural environment (such as their isolation from the continent, the marine currents, climate, speciation, etc.), human and conservation. Afterwards, we will visit Cerro Tijeretas, where we will observe a spectacular panoramic landscape. This place owes its name to the number of frigates present. It is also interesting for historical reasons, since it was the first place where Charles Darwin landed in all Galapagos. During this visit our guide will give us more information about the important discoveries of this scientist in the islands. The flora of this zone is very diverse and we will be able to observe native species of cactus and different mangroves. A small cove just below one of the viewpoints is the ideal place to do a snorkeling session and discover the marine species that hide under the waters: sea turtles, sea lions, many different species of fish and hopefully a visit from a shark. On the way back we will be able to enjoy a swim in the waters of Punta Carola Beach, where many sea lions rest and where we will also be able to observe marine iguanas, among other species.
*Note: Lunch on your own today allows you some time on your own and to explore to area
6   Nov 10   San Cristobal Island-Petrel Sea Bird
learn more
Highlights: Petrel sea bird monitoring, naturalist presentation, waterfall, beach/ocean time

Included: breakfast/lunch/-, naturalist guide, activities, camera for monitoring, data analysis

The objective of this new reserve is to conserve The Galapagos petrel (Pterodroma phaeopygia), endemic to this archipelago and critically endangered, and to care for one of the main sources of fresh water in the archipelago.
The petrel is a large seabird and is quite long-lived since, in ideal conditions. But it has characteristics and behaviors that make it quite vulnerable. In the Galapagos National Park several lines of action have been outlined such as environmental education, which will be carried out through talks and awareness campaigns; control of introduced animal species such as cats, rats and plants such as blackberry and lantana. These actions will be implemented through monitoring and control of this species.
Today we will actively participate in Petrel monitoring, receive a talk about this endemic bird and visit a freshwater waterfall.
*Note: Today in the afternoon we will have some free time to enjoy the many beautiful beaches of the island.
7   Nov 11   San Cristobal Island  The Jocotoco Foundation-Native Plants Reforestation
learn More
Highlights: native plant reforestation efforts, elimination of blackberry, beach/ocean time

Included: breakfast/lunch/-, private transportation, naturalist guide, activities, reforestation tools, 10 native species

Today we will talk about reforestation efforts to help the ecosystem recover its native flora. In San Cristóbal, the El Junco area is the habitat of native ferns and Miconia, a unique species. With the visit of man to the Galapagos in the 17th century, it is presumed that the introduction of exotic species, especially plants, began, but the greatest introduction occurred at the beginning of the 19th century, with human colonization of the islands. Introduced plants are one of the greatest threats to the Galapagos flora, as many of them are highly invasive, competing with native and endemic plants for light, water and nutrition. In the El Junco area, one the invasive plants are blackberry, which has spread to the upper part of San Cristóbal Island. We will actively participate in the elimination of blackberry as an invasive species and in reforestation with native varieties.

*Note: Today in the afternoon we will have some free time to enjoy the many beautiful beaches of the island.
8    Nov 12   San Cristobal The Island Jocotoco Foundation- Sea Lion Monitoring
Learn more
Highlights: Sea Lion monitoring, beach/ocean time

Included: breakfast/lunch/-, private transportation, naturalist guide, activities, camera traps, monitoring sheets

There are two endemic species of sea lions in Galapagos; Galapagos fur seal (Arctocephalus galapagoensis) and the Galapagos sea lion (Zalophus wollebaeki), of which the total population is estimated at 25,000 individuals.
A periodic census is carried out on all the beaches to monitor the variation of the populations and to determine which are the areas of greatest influence of these animals, what behaviours they exhibit and how they move throughout their lives. Direct observation methods are used in the colonies counting all the sea lions along the area to be monitored.
Today we will actively participate in the sea lion monitoring and use camera traps to observe their behaviors.

*Note:
Today in the afternoon we will have some free time to enjoy the many beautiful beaches of the island.
