DID YOU KNOW?

Animal Car collisions account for staggering statistics:
1 MILLION ANIMALS PER DAY DIE on roadways in the USA...over 300 million per year!
HUNDREDS of people DIE and thousands are INJURED each year.
$8 BILLION in property damage and countless dollars of human suffering each year.

You may ask what are Wildlife Crossings anyway?

Wildlife crossings come in many shapes, sizes, over roads, under roads around roads. It depends on the need in the particular area and "funding availabilty" hence the big need for increased general public awareness. They can be a bridge that looks very similar to a car bridge yet will have grass, trees, shrubs growing on them to make it comfortable for the animals. Check out this short video on a Colorado crossing structure 90% decrease in kill rate. Please also realize it may be the big animals that get all the press yet these crossings are used by ALL creatures from the tiniest like turtles and mice.

Colorado now needs these on I-70! Another example is using an already built bridge and expanding the dimensions underneath. This is what has been done on I-97 in Washington State. The funds are not there yet to do what's really needed based on studies yet they took an old bridge and expanded the underneath and built fencing to guide the animals to use it and it's been a huge success.
Wildlife are soooooo smart when given a choice!
During the Walk4WildlifeCrossings project I'll be raising public awareness and ways for you to make a difference. I'll be posting about my experiences, adventures and ways you can get involved saving the lives of wild animals and ultimately wild places. Also, l'll be taking wildlife nature photography that will be shared online through my BoldlyExplore FB page, Instagram and LinkedIn. More in depth blog posts through email sign up below.
I'm hoping my little action of walking across the US to make a difference ripples far and wide! And that you join me for the walk and become inspired to connect and make a difference yourself. I'll be posting ways you can get involved as I go and join me below.
Last, due to the amazing hard work of countless individuals some states in the USA and countries are far ahead in this pursuit. Washington state here in the US seems is leading the charge with an amazing collaborative project years in the making for the I-90 corridor animal crossings project. An amazing story of people coming together and making a huge difference reconnecting the north and south cascades! the work has started and I'll be show casing it in my walk YET much more needs to be done in Washington state like the Safe Passage I-97 project(see below) so those of you from Washington state are still needed to keep this work moving forward.
THE STATES I'LL BE WALKING THROUGH:
I'll be adding information about each state:
WASHINGTON:  Conservation Northwest and the SAFE PASSAGE HIGHWAY I-97 project are needing $10,000 to complete the initial project please understand every little bit of donation helps. You can learn more here and when you decide to donate *click on the orange button in the upper right corner under Gift Information from the drop down select "other" then write "Safe Passage 97" in the comment box. Already they've completed parts of it and have had fantastic results reducing collisions causing wildlife deaths. This last remaining amount will be a huge win for wildlife and humans traveling through the area for years to come.
